Qualifications
Degree

Undergraduate MComp Computer Science with Honours (2005, expected)
Awarded by The University of Sheffield. The degree included a third year project on morphing of faces and additional modules in Mathematics and Psychology. Predicted a first class with honours degree.

The course consists of modules taught by well-known researchers including Prof. Graham Birtwistle, Prof. Noel Sharkey, Dr. Tony Simons and Dr. Alan Watt, and includes much cutting-edge material, especially in the field of Software Engineering.

Major projects include:

  • Crossover Project
This project served as an introduction to Software Engineering by requiring groups to devise and program simple business applications. The project included coverage of managing meetings, requirements capture, UML and CASE tools, formal specification in Z, software development environments and testing. My group was required to complete a portfolio of work at each stage of the project which would then be passed on to another group who would continue where mine left off. It was therefore vital to conform the UML notation standards and explain why we chose to do things a certain way. A short group presentation was also given at the end of the yearlong project.
  • Software Hut
This half-year microcosm of a real Software House was pioneered at Sheffield and is famous nationally. Several groups competitively set about producing a software product for a real-world client. My team used the Extreme Programming (XP) methodology to produce a database for medication side effects which had to conform to international standards protocols.
  • Individual Research Project (Dissertation)
I worked to produce a tool to automate morphs between the faces of humans and monkeys for a client. The main areas under investigation included choice of morphing technique, user issues in specifying the morph, and automation through feature identification and correspondence determination. This culminated in a major written report and a demonstration of the software alongside a poster explaining what the project had achieved. The client was satisfied with the resultant product and used it extensively for their research purposes.
  • Genesys Solutions
Genesys is possibly unique in the world. It is a business owned by the University and run exclusively by a student workforce that changes every year. Every aspect of this software house must be run by teams, including marketing, system administration, development and programming. The project is equivalent in time to a typical part-time job and involves designing websites or writing software with Extreme Programming on Linux and offering support contracts for real clients, negotiated by students. Projects may not correspond with academic years, so new students may be required to provide support for a product offered by a previous Genesys workforce. My role is as a developer in a team making the ADEPT plugins for the open source Eclipse IDE project, for which Genesys has received a grant from IBM. The diverse nature of the work means that I may also be working on other projects within the business.

Certifications

Brainbench (Transcript number 3249686)
Brainbench certifications are used by major businesses including IBM, EDS, JPMorgan, Manpower, Monster and NASA. They are awarded after completing online exams in which questions automatically adapt to the candidate's skill level. Certificates are valid for three years.

I have passed more than 70 Brainbench certifications in various skills including:

  • Job Role Certificates
Web Designer (BCIP), Web Developer (BCIP), Computer Programmer, C++ Programmer, IT Business Analyst, Knowledge Worker.

BCIP denotes Brainbench Certified Internet Professional.

  • Programming Skills Certificates
HTML (Master), Java (Master), JavaScript (Master), PHP (Master), C, C++, C#, CSS, Perl, SQL, UML, XHTML, XML.
  • IT Industry Skills Certificates
Programmer/Analyst Aptitude (Master), Customer Requirements Analysis, Data Modelling, IT, Programming, Web and Web Design Concepts, IT Industry Knowledge, Security, Systems Analysis, Windows Management.
  • Core and Business Skills Certificates
Customer Assistance (Master), Internet Explorer (Master), Listening (Master), Mathematics (Master), Problem Solving (Master), Communication, English, Office Software, Presentation, Telephone.
  • Other Certificates
General Sciences (Master), Computer Graphics Software.

NB. Please note that all these exams were awarded online and relate more to theoretical ability than proven capability, especially in more practical skills.
