Activities Committee, 2004-2005

Nature of activity:Approving society applications and allocating funding
Skills:Budgeting, diplomacy, communication, listening
Duration:1 year

Description
As an elected member of this Student Union decision-making body I have helped to decide which groups should be allowed Union funding or be bestowed the title of Union society. This involves balancing budget constraints with the need to support student groups and ensure fair levels of funding to over 150 supported societies.

Societies must conform to certain Union rules such as not duplicating the role of an existing society, not being sports-based, and not taking part in illegal activities. Funding bids must also be considered in terms of available funds, need, and the inclusion of funding-exempt items in the bid, such as clothing and accommodation. Sometimes additional information is required or the applicant appeals against a decision and attends the meeting to be questioned about the bid.

Society budgets are calculated annually with extra funds available for both societies and individuals to bid for. These pots of extra cash are also allocated annually, with any remaining cash being lost into the central fund at the end of the year, so it was important that these were fully used each year without running out of funds too early and worthy bids having to be rejected.

Union Assembly, 2003-2004

Nature of activity:Representing students on key policy decisions within the Students' Union.
Skills:Details will appear here shortly.
Duration:1 year

Description
Union Assembly is the highest level of student-run democracy within the Union, comprising the elected Union Officers, representatives from Standing and Representative Committees, and cross-campus representatives. Its role is to scrutinse and approve the minutes of other committees, agree an annual budget for the Union including salaries for Union Officers, submit motions to NUS conferences, oversee and appoint Returning Officers for elections, renew policy, and take broad and general charge of all activities within the Union, with the notable exception of staffing matters. The fortnightly meetings also provide a unique and invaluable opportunity to question the Union Officers and hold them to account, the outcome of which often has a direct effect on Union policy and activities.

I was one of four students directly elected by the student body to represent them at Union Assembly. During my time on the committee I stood up for women's rights, challenged the Union on its stance on matters that hadn't been put to referrendum, defended autonomous JCRs amid the threat of residential student committees being restructured, and contributed to a debate that would later result in a complete restructuring of the Union's democratic structures.

The Union noted that I had a question to ask each week, even if nobody else did. My actions were guided by a sense of fairness rather than adherance to any particular political ideal.

The Officers during my time on Union Assembly were some of the least criticised by the student body. While the exact reasons for this aren't easily determined, it would be nice to think that I had a hand in spotting and preventing the bad decisions before they made the headlines.

Awards

Students Union Achievement Award (2005)
I was one of ten final year students to be awarded a Students Union Achievement Award in its inceptual year for my "sustained and invaluable contribution to the Union's democratic structures." The award recognised my achievements on four Union committees, the NUS motion I cowrote, my election campaign for Activities Officer and various other contributions to support and defend a wide range of student rights.

Centenary Achievement Award (2005)
To mark the hundredth year since The University of Sheffield was awarded its Royal Charter myself and 24 other students were presented with medals to recognise our achievements throughout our time at the University. I was awarded my medal in the field of community in honour of my contribution to student life, naturally complimenting the award from the Students' Union.
